Since the release of The Conjuring in 2013, there has been a lot of speculation around whether it actually happened. Was this a fictional supernatural horror film? Or is there more to it than meets the eye?

Prior to filming the movie, Warner Bros. stated that it would be loosely based on events that occurred in real life. Following its release, people became even more curious about the occurrences that inspired this movie.

In this blog, we’ll dive deeper into the terrifying story behind this mega-successful movie.

Were the Warrens Fictional Characters?

Ed and Lorraine Warren, the protagonists of The Conjuring, were paranormal experts who lived in the US. The couple worked on a plethora of high-profile cases, including the Amityville House, which inspired a couple of movies.

Lorraine Warren was a clairvoyant and medium who was known for communicating with spirits and demons. Shortly after the release of the movie, Lorraine confirmed that almost every detail depicted in the movie was correct.

In fact, she played an active role in the production of the movie. As a major consultant on set, she helped shape the movie based on the couple’s real-life experience. According to Lorraine, the experiences she had with her husband were so “incredibly frightening” that she still struggled to talk about them years later.

What Happened to the Perron Family?

The Perron family (Roger and Carolyn Perron, and their five daughters) lived in the Old Arnold Estate during the 1970s. Yes, this was a real family. And yes, they were possessed by spirits. However, it gets slightly more unsettling.

InThe Conjuring, the Perron family lived in the farmhouse for a short period of time. In reality, they had to put up with the farmhouse for nine years (1971–1980) because they couldn’t afford to move out. In fact, their experiences were so harrowing that their neighbors advised them to leave their lights on at night on multiple occasions.

While the spirits present in their house were initially benevolent, things gradually took a turn for the worse. Bathsheba was real, and threatened the family countless times. Carolyn later confirmed that Bathsheba’s spirit possessed her body at one point during their time in the cursed house.
