In 1992, Hurricane Andrew was off the east coast of Florida and predicted to continue north, but strengthened and made a right-angle turn inland around midnight and devastated Miami-Dade County. Hurricane Ian just eerily repeated this pattern. It was expected to hit Tampa, but instead turned abruptly east and went right through Fort Myers. Many had decided not to evacuate and were caught in the devastation.
