The Ancient Stones of Puma Punku and Tiwanaku, Bolivia
There’s just something about old stones being carved into unbelievably marvelous structures—like the ones we find in Puma Punku and Tiwanaku, Bolivia. Carved at perfect and sharp right angles, with perfectly round holes, how did ancient humans ever build structures so geometrically perfect? What tools did they have that could rival even our engineering marvels?
We hate to break it to you, but it probably wasn’t humans. It’s a complex created by Anunnaki extraterrestrials, thought to have been built when they resided in Mesopotamia—present-day Iraq.
Bangarh
Famously known as the most haunted place in all of India (and India is huge!), Bangarh is an ancient fort shrouded in mystery. In fact, it is supposed to be such a dangerous place that visitation between sunset and sunrise is strictly prohibited—by the government of India, no less. If the government is paranoid enough to stop you from going into a stone and rock fortress, something serious is definitely going on.
According to one legend, the fort (and everything around it) was cursed by a “tantric” (a kind of magician), who tried and failed to make the princess of Bangarh fall in love with him.
Highgate Cemetery
Visit gothic England in all its glory—or don’t, since it is considered to be one of the most haunted places in England, rivaled only by the Tower of London. If you were to visit, however, you’d think you had just been transported right into one of Mrs. Radcliffe’s gothic novels. The whole place is as English as crumpets and scones: oak trees and lichens, moss and tombstones. The gothic architecture does nothing to alleviate the illusion.
Visitors have reported all sorts of unusual goings-on here: from apparitions to vampires.
We’ll say one thing, though: it’s a choice location for vampire hunters.
Area 51
There was no way we were going to end this list without mentioning the most mysterious place in the United States—or what was formerly a mysterious place. Ever since people threatened to storm Area 51—that would have been a sight—a lot has come to light.
Situated in the middle of nowhere—a.k.a the Nevada Desert—Area 51 was once the CIA’s worst-kept secret. Locals had been whispering of alien research and strange aircraft for years, but officials had gone on pretending it just didn’t exist. Well, as they say: the absence of evidence isn’t the evidence of absence.
And so, after the rumors started getting really out of hand, the CIA finally came out and admitted that Area 51, indeed and in fact, exists.
