In watching a docudrama about the Apollo program working to send astronauts to the moon in the 1960s, I was again moved by the tragic fire that killed 3 astronauts early in the program. They were simply carrying out communication exercises to check equipment in their space capsule that was sitting on the launch pad. In hindsight, having a pure oxygen environment proved to be a greater hazard than expected, when a spark from a frayed electrical wire was believed to have started the fire. Was this just a tragic accident, or was this orchestrated to happen to create a spectacle that hindered and almost killed the space program altogether?

When the Apollo 12 ascent stage of the lunar lander was deliberately crashed into the moon to provide a signal for a seismometer left on the lunar surface, the moon rang like a gong, reverberating for nearly an hour.
