Since a 1971 decision by The Joint Commission, which accredits healthcare facilities, hospitals haven’t had to conduct autopsies to remain in good standing. The commission had mandated autopsy rates of 20% for community hospitals and 25% for teaching facilities but dropped the requirement. Is there anything sinister behind this decision to end a time-honored quality control feedback about true causes of death and accuracy of diagnoses, beyond the prosaic explanation there are increased legal liabilities in the current climate?
