A recent promotion cites a long-standing mystery of Icelanders having unusual robust health and longevity. It claimed the explanation lies with soil enrichment from volcanic ash that contains sulfur and selenium. While that explanation might contribute, is the major reason for the longevity of Iceland’s citizens their relative isolation and not being heavily exposed to chronic disease-causing viruses?

A number of researchers have investigated groups of indigenous people who are somewhat isolated and exhibit remarkably good health and longevity. The major assumptions are that they are either blessed with a superior genetic endowment, or happen to have a superior natural diet that keeps them healthy. Support for the latter hypothesis is seemingly shown by a number of follow-up studies revealing that when their citizens emigrate to western nations or more populous countries, their health deteriorates. Is the major reason for most, if not all, of these isolated populations faring so well, simply because they are not being exposed to chronic disease-causing viruses in their food and beverages, being too small a group for the interlopers to worry about, so their exposure to such viruses is much less, through visitors and perhaps some who travel to other countries. What can Creator tell us?

A scientific paper [NK Hollenberg, et al., Flavanols, the Kuna, Cocoa Consumption, and Nitric Oxide, J Am Soc Hypertens. 2009; 3(2): doi: 10.1016/j.jash.2008.11.001] describes the remarkably low incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes mellitus, and cancer, in the cause of death among the Kuna Indians of Panama. Is this because of beneficial properties of the cocoa beverage most consume daily, is it because of a unique genetic complement, or simply because these island dwellers are more isolated from the mainland and largely avoid exposure to disease-causing viruses, which is still not appreciated by medical science as a causal link to 85% of chronic illness cases?
