How important or helpful is it to have a large collective of people say the exact same prayer, using the exact same words? For example, General Patton supplied a precise weather prayer to more than 200,000 individuals, asking for a very specific outcome that the Divine was able to provide. Suppose instead, he simply asked his men to “pray for good weather,” and further suppose that the exact same number of people who actually prayed Patton’s prayer from his printed card, instead offered their own sincere heartfelt prayer with the same level of belief and sincerity, but the prayers themselves would all have been authored by each individual rather than one author. Assuming all else was equivalent, how critical was it that everyone was focused on the exact same prayer?

How surprised and confounded was the Extraterrestrial Alliance when the weather broke in favor of the Allies, enabling them to win the Battle of the Bulge (where Patton had asked his 3rd Army to pray for good weather)? The element of surprise is a key determinant in any conflict. There is a saying “there are no atheists in foxholes.” When humans feel safe (like before Pearl Harbor) they pray less, and/or with less focus; but when feeling vulnerable (after Pearl Harbor), their prayer work is ramped up. During the Korean War, American troops in the Chosin Reservoir were outnumbered 8 to 1, supplies were running low, temperatures plummeted to minus 25 degrees, and food was almost impossible to warm up. They were also running low on mortar shells. In ordering mortar shell resupplies, they used a codename established for the munitions: Tootsie Rolls. Somebody took that literally, however, and airdropped the beleaguered troops crates of the candy, instead.
