Sentient meaning consciousness that possesses self-awareness and the capacity for abstract thought. It is assumed that sentience is variable, that there are degrees of sentience. For instance, apes have demonstrated some sentience, but minuscule in comparison to humans. It is also assumed that sentience is not brain-dependent and that angels, of course, have sentience. The question is, where there is sentience, is there also an ego, or the potential for ego?
