Pity is a lower order emotion because it implies a judgment of another and a kind of rejection of them in their plight as though it is an offense and potentially even a threat as though it could rub off on a person. So it is a kind of repulsion—the opposite of an embrace to nurture and restore love. It is a rejection through finding the person objectionable, if not loathsome, and someone to turn away from. In a sense, it is a kind of false empathy. It is attesting to the plight of another but not with caring and love, but condemnation.
