Something as simple as holding a door open for a woman has suddenly become an uncertain endeavor that could just as easily elicit condemnation and accusations of bigotry and misogyny as it does a smile and warm “thank you.” As a result, many, if not by now most, men have given up on the practice altogether, leaving a great many more traditional women confused and even angry. A recent experiment had a male set up an attractive female profile, and it generated 20,000 matches in a just a few hours. Sixty percent of college graduates today are women. Women are increasingly filling managerial roles and displacing men in numerous professional occupations such as law and medicine. Men, by and large, have no issues “dating down” and entering relationships with women who earn much less than they do, and who are even unemployed altogether. Whereas, the opposite is almost never true for successful women. Overwhelmingly, they hold out and say yes only to men who make as much or preferably more than they do, who are taller than they are (or at least not shorter), and more “successful and worldly,” however they might personally define that. The dating scene is especially problematic, and even deeply traumatic, for single mothers of all ages. With the divorce rate above 50%, along with the huge number of births happening out of wedlock, it’s reaching the point where more children are being raised by single mothers than are being raised by married cohabiting biological parents. Overwhelmingly, most single men, and more often than that, the more desirable single men, want nothing to do with a single mother.
