DWQA QuestionsCategory: Coronavirus COVID-19Does the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have a test that can be used on individuals to positively identify that the person tested is suffering from what is known as the coronavirus? Is this in use in any way that would actually help the situation?

The means of testing is of moderate benefit. Not all of the test kits are equally effective. They vary greatly in accuracy. There are many false positives as well as false negatives. That is eventually sorted out if there is rigorous follow up by sending sampling to the CDC for confirmation. So there are many assumptions being made, particularly among members of the press, thinking of this as a well-established technology with which there is an established experience base, but this is early yet and the wherewithal for these kinds of organisms is less well-developed than ideal. This is piggybacking off of the earlier generations of coronavirus weapons that have been launched in the past, so there is decent technology and experience with it to prepare testing materials and that is what is in use currently. It does a passable job although it could be better in precision and sensitivity both, and this does add an extra layer of difficulty and confusion. There is no question of there being a disease because it is demonstrable within CT scans of the afflicted who have characteristic lesions.
