There can be many reasons for this. It can be for personal defense against being eaten by animals. It can also be a vehicle for a karmic lesson, to cause difficulty and a painful encounter for someone who is careless. There are many varied species present on the earth that are not intended for your world which bring ugliness as well as hazards that were in keeping with the dark intentions of those out of alignment in extraterrestrial domains, but were brought to the earth eventually, to torment humans as well, by the interlopers.
