Or was this more about further depletion of human resources and capital to continue softening us up for the annihilation? (As well as plenty of MAP training opportunities?)”

There are always collateral benefits of those kinds that are a benefit to the interlopers in worsening things to the level of launching armed conflicts. The cleanup of artifacts they could do clandestinely without difficulty. They do not need to get a war going to enable getting access as they can go anywhere they choose in cloaked craft and through interdimensional translocation and in the dead of night if need be for security reasons. But having an armed conflict underway that might restrict people’s activities because they need to hunker down and stay out of sight for long intervals might be advantageous for serving as a way of clearing an area of potential witnesses to an archaeological expedition, for example, but that does not constitute sufficient reason to launch a war—that is always done to create greater harm and suffering for humans.
