We would like to see more governmental bodies follow this example and cease poisoning water with fluoride. Even though it is true that fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, the local administration of fluoride to the teeth can be done through a mouthwash or toothpaste not intended to be swallowed. Fluoride in the drinking water will be ingested to a greater extent than what happens inadvertently with a brief exposure of the oral cavity to a source of fluoride to help strengthen the tooth enamel which is the mechanism for the benefit of fluoride. That local delivery would be far safer than poisoning the water supply because the uptake in the body will cause fluoride to be deposited in the brain and other tissues and exert toxic effects, and that is a high price to pay to prevent dental caries.
