As you saw intuitively, this was totally a manipulation by the Extraterrestrial Alliance, to carry out a surreptitious manipulation through mind control, to have an unconscious action take place without conscious awareness or memory. This is one of the more elegant things they can do, to turn someone temporarily into a kind of robot to act at their behest without a recollection afterwards that they had a timeout interval. As shown by the results, with having only one survivor and 260 deaths, plus a number of victims on the ground who also perished in the crash, this was quite a sizeable dark reward for but a moment's work. That adds to the glee they experience as it is rewarding to their egos in relishing the power they hold over the human underlings they manipulate.
