Your question has listed the possible answer that is correct. This was interloper mischief manipulating the animal to become hostile and take violent action, turning against a human charged with its care and keeping. This was an unprovoked and seemingly illogical and quite shocking behavior that was out of character for this animal given the long-term familiarity in its setting and life routine. While not ideal, there are worse things than being under human care and support in terms of bad things that happen normally in the wild. So, this was something that could not be appreciated and the elephant ends up a fellow victim in being charged with the crime, so to speak, unjustly. There is no justice in your world all too often when things like this happen, because the guilty party is never out in the open nor are they reachable to mete out justice, even with an accusation or suspicions pointing directly at something otherworldly on occasion. It will defy belief, given the programming heavily administered to dismiss all notions of extraterrestrial involvement in things as silly and illogical, given how isolated the Earth is compared to other star systems and the impossibility, seemingly, of interstellar travel. To pin it on extraterrestrials as a malevolent influence is yet another layer of wild conspiracy theory indulgence to the average person's biased mindset, when programmed to dismiss all such hypothetical explanations for unpleasantness. Nor will there be a way to reassure or satisfy the family about what happened. After all, the truth of that sequence of events is more horrible and tragic than what is obvious on the surface, so truth will not help even if offered.
