DWQA QuestionsCategory: KarmaMorality and ethics are often seen as something to talk about in church, but in the business world, one must adopt an attitude of “eat or be eaten” because of its highly competitive nature. What guidance can you give to people about their career in choosing their field of endeavor, and the people they work with?

The truism that "you are known by the company you keep" applies very much to this question and the answer we will give you. When you comport with those unworthy, there will be a negative consequence. When present in a den of thieves, the idea of exploiting others seems more normal because it is accepted by the group without question. It is a basic assumption, in fact, that its members can do whatever they like with no regard for the rights of their victim and no real compassion for their suffering that will result—this is the mentality of the sociopath.

When business organizations are run by sociopaths, it will be customary to have a cutthroat way of operating to, in effect, take no prisoners but to be ruthless, unforgiving, and exploit every potential weakness of the opposition to gain a dominant position and, if possible, to drive the other parties out of business altogether, even being ruthless and underhanded to go to lengths to sabotage the efforts of the competition, which can be done in various ways if people are creative and lack moral principles. Many types of businesses are widely known to be predatory in nature and unwilling to play by the rules, if they can get away with it, and not respect their customers or clients, and are simply there to pick their pockets and not look back.

If you choose to enter such an organization, you, in a sense, are signing on with the darkness, for they are in alignment with the darkness that works against love and light. This is a quite unfavorable environment for anyone to be a part of because it will undermine you. It is inevitable that it will drag you down in some way. To get along in any group, one must make compromises and when the requirements of a position mean the bending or dispensing of normal rules of human conduct, things will simply not end well and you will be drawn into making transgressions that leave a karmic trail of damage in their wake, and this will revisit you at some point seeking restitution, and then you will suffer more greatly than anyone you manipulated or cheated out of something.

Some forethought about the direction of your life is called for here because this will have much to do with your happiness. If your workplace is not a good fit for you, you will be miserable and this is almost certain. People want to be where they are needed but also where they are accepted and valued, at least in a basic human way, and where they feel comfortable and fit in with the role they must play—so they are not expected to lie, to cheat, to cut corners, to take risks with other people’s lives or property. The sociopath has no reservation about operating under such conditions but normal people will feel the pressure and, in response, will either end up quitting and starting over or will succumb in some way and have a breakdown, unless they become corrupted as well and grow to tolerate participation in evildoing. This is certainly not a prescription for happiness and success in life.

Being on a divine path has many, many rewards. Even if this does not appear to hold the greatest reward, we would encourage you to widen your perspective a bit and consider the karmic benefits from being in an environment where you deal with people honestly, objectively, with consideration for their feelings, their needs, and the occasional special circumstances where they might need additional help or an accommodation to make something possible for them that you can afford but they cannot. There can be a degree of sharing, even in the business world, and an accommodation made for those who suffer and have financial limitations. This is quite a stretch from the current state of affairs, but we are speaking first of all here about the mindset that represents being on a divine path whether or not it can be fully implemented to the highest degree and uniformly with no exceptions.

In today’s world, that, in fact, is unlikely. There are often many compromises made in how business affairs are conducted. There are sins of commission and sins of omission, and the latter, being more common, become easy to fall into and accepted without hesitation or question, but in the doing will incur karmic consequences, and this will cycle back and cause a problem for the person. If you keep in mind that you will never get away with anything, in an absolute sense, this can be a valuable guiding light for your conduct and choices in your career as well as every other aspect of your life. The fact you are working as an agent of an organization does not spare you from liability if people are harmed by what your organization does, so this deserves careful planning and consideration for how you want your future to be. It is wise to look at the long-term picture and not the near-term benefit.
