My client [name withheld] in a channeling of her deep subconscious described having an experience at age 4 when she felt abandoned by God. Was that a true experience she was recalling at that tender age and how could a four-year-old have such an awareness and need for God? Was there abuse of her involved?

This not only happens, it is commonplace. The young all have an awareness of the Divine until they are trained by society that it is a silly notion and they are misguided in some way. So this is an interesting window into the reality of existence, that coming into physical form is entering a dark place and the curtain closes, bit by bit, and all descend into darkness. The disconnection is functionally quite complete because of the separation in thought from awareness of the higher realms. This is part of the birthright but will diminish with age because the intuitive senses are not rewarded by society and will be less and less prominent in the awareness, and can be lost altogether in some cases. So this was a true memory and deserves notice because it reflects the Divine presence and the awareness of humans at a young age in the reality of the Divine. They are living witnesses in that regard, and all could benefit in listening to them. There was a severe abuse situation going on. She will remember this, and this will resonate strongly with her.
