There are two pathways to arriving at a conclusion about a matter. One is to investigate the underlying evidence, testimony, calculations, observations, etc., and the other is to simply borrow the conclusions of trusted others. Hence the overly heavy reliance on acquiring and showcasing credentials—so that one knows whom to trust as well as be trusted about a chosen specialty or body of knowledge. Is this human obsession with credentials only an issue in a free will physical environment?
