The difficulty you are having is because you are focusing solely on your physicality, the physical makeup you think of as "yourself" as a being. When you leave the body behind, you are not departing from yourself. What makes you an individual is your consciousness, that awareness, that soul connection, and that karmic history that connects to the akashic records of all that happens—that all survives intact upon your passing.
So you can simply think of your physical body as a vehicle of conveyance much like an automobile, it’s what you use to get around, to move from place to place, to act out your desires, much like a kind of robotic shell you can command. You must learn how to do this as an infant, to move the hands and arms and fingers, to stand, to balance and be upright, to walk and run. Once that body dies and no longer serves you, you just move on. When you come back in a new incarnation, you get a new conveyance to be within. This may in fact be in exactly the same family as reincarnated individuals in the same hierarchy. It may be a variation of some participating again, but not all. It might be an inverse relationship where all wait for the children from one incarnation to return to be parents in a new incarnation of the parents they had in the prior life.
You are exactly the same being coming back into a new setting. You will grow up with a different awareness and memory because you will not be aware of this, so even though your memory is wiped clean because you are disconnected from the akashic records on a conscious level, your deep subconscious will know who and where and what you have been in other lifetimes so there will be a resonance with past doings, nonetheless. Your karmic makeup from preexisting lifetimes will impinge on you and begin to govern the outcome of the new incarnation in many, many ways. It will bring you into contact with some of the same players to repeat prior situations, both that benefitted you and that harmed you, as a way to be rewarded and as a way to work on healing and preventing discord and calamity. It will seem all new and all fresh because of the memory lapse, so it is more akin to leaving for a time and then coming back with amnesia and then learning to fit in within a new environment with no prior recollection, so everything is new.
In the case of incarnation, it is not as severe a disruption as amnesia, only for the conscious level of the mind, for the deep subconscious, as we have said, will retain a memory of who you are and that prior history, because it is always reviewing the akashic records to look and learn from the parallel lifetimes you participate in. So you are not recreated to have a new lifetime, you are simply reassigned to a new setting but as yourself, the very same individual. In a way, the disruption of the link in memory accelerates the karmic consequences. Because everything is new, you are, in a practical sense, starting from scratch in many respects, although inevitably with some native ability and talent seemingly inherited genetically but which may also be largely a soul characteristic on display—but this accelerates the demands, and the extra challenge means you will grow more muscles and more quickly, because you will not have an easy time of it. So it makes life more challenging and difficult but ultimately more rewarding because more will be accomplished in the end. Looking back at the aggregate of learning and achievement, the disconnection is an aberration but is not a complete liability.
