We see your lungs as doing quite beautifully. You are experiencing the vestiges of cellular memory now in what is going on with your lung function. After all, that is where the rubber meets the road, how the body knows something is amiss. It is the lack of oxygen attendant to the loss of lung capacity and the ability to keep up with oxygen demand on the part of the bodily tissues, so you will feel distress when there is a mismatch. That is a normal signaling to slow down and catch up, take a rest, do a timeout to let your body get back into balance so you do not overtax yourself to a dangerous level of anoxia that could be damaging to the heart or brain. Even so, this is not a problem, even with the lung tissue per se. It is the cellular memory alone, recapitulating the shortfall from prior era dysfunction and this will need to be worked through for some time longer here in order to have it fade and begin to perceive a reawakening of vital capacity, long hindered now, to be mostly a memory of when you were young and vigorous and could run a mile and a half in 11 or 12 minutes, which is quite respectable for someone who doesn't work at it and was not in a rigorous and concerted training effort to get your time down further, but only doing routine runs in a gym class and nothing more.
So you need not worry at all about this. We have your back, we have your future in mind, and see a wonderful resurgence of capability body-wide that is coming for you that will amaze those who know your history and are close to you in seeing how you function day-to-day, and it will be quite noticeable. You will make a believer out of your dear wife, in fact. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding and you are the pudding in this case.
