The Reverend Dennis Bennett, an Episcopal charismatic leader who has been in the movement since 1960, and his wife, Rita, give a good instance in their book, The Holy Spirit and You. They tell of a young Christian who had married a Japanese girl while stationed in Japan with the armed forces. Having returned to the United States with his bride, he took her to a Full Gospel Church in Oregon, but she prayed her Buddhist prayers even while he was praying to God through Jesus Christ. ‘Next to them was kneeling a middle-aged woman, a housewife from the community,’ the Bennetts say. This woman began to pray aloud in tongues, and the Japanese bride suddenly seized her husband’s arm. ‘Listen!’ she whispered in excitement. ‘This woman speak to me in Japanese! She say to me: “You have tried Buddha and he does you no good; why don’t you try Jesus Christ?” She does not speak to me in ordinary Japanese language, she speak temple Japanese, and use my whole Japanese name, which no one in this country knows!’ It is not surprising that this young lady became a Christian!” What is Creator’s perspective?

Here is an example of faith in action, enabling the creation and witnessing as well of a miracle in allowing communication beyond human knowledge and awareness in speaking the tongue of another living witness, but unknown to the speaker themselves. This is a contemporary example of the biblical reference to the act of speaking in tongues and its true meaning and purpose of communicating through divine means that allow conveying an understanding in the listener. This is a true account and illustrates the nature and purpose of miracles, that they are largely personal events witnessed by the self alone or a few, most of whom are believers so this keeps things within the rules of engagement, to not overstep the limits nonbelievers place on themselves so they will not have their doubt challenged unduly by a spiritual act in their presence.
