What is being addressed here is an excess of enjoyment and fixation on the materialistic aspect of what is being coveted—that level of covetousness rising to a greedy desire, thinking only of the self. What this quote is reflecting is the value for strengthening of the soul in its journey, and the maintenance of divine alignment by having a balanced approach to gaining things for the self, and making progress in life to get ahead means, ideally, people will do it in a careful fashion, not to excess. To covet something and get it hastily leaves a gap in learning and growth that is represented by establishing a lofty goal but then doing what is usually required in the way of hard work to earn the attainment of what is desired. Covetousness is a strong emotional desire to have it now, and that is emotionally equivalent to elbowing one's way to the front of the line and assuming you will be next because you want what is coveted so badly. So that, not only is taking a material shortcut to hasten getting what one wants, but taking a moral shortcut in bypassing the need for discernment to do things fairly when they are appropriate and earned in a way that will be acceptable to others. It is one characteristic of the sociopath, the extent to which they will delight and revel in their ill‑gotten gains from preying on others around them to get things for themselves. Such acts not only cheat the other person out of something that more greatly belongs to them, but it cheats the self of going about things in a socially acceptable and fair manner for which someone who gains a reward can feel rightfully proud of themselves, and hold their head up high in the community, because in whatever manner they win out it is because they have made some contribution of themselves to make that reward well-deserved. We have said before and will say again here that a perpetrator always has two victims, the one they prey on and take advantage of and themselves, in creating a karmic debt they will have to reckon with, and the lesson could be a painful one.
