This can be used to reach beings in the light as well as earthbound spirits. The latter are easier because they will have no hesitation should they perceive an outreach to them. The beings in the light will be more restrained because they have a closer awareness of Creator and the injunctions about communicating with the earth plane. It must be for a high purpose, it must be invited, it must be done in a way, at a time, and with the information restricted to only what is appropriate in terms of the rules of engagement—to not lead the human in shaping their lives, to give them something they have not done proper preparation for to be ready to receive, nor can an outreach be done when there is insufficient belief quotient or belief in themselves as worthy. So communication for the beings in the light is less certain to happen.
The Ghost Box itself can be a means for communication to happen. Its primary value is that it focuses the intention and backs it with a technological adjunct to facilitate the communication, and this will help raise the belief quotient somewhat to make the person more confident something can happen, and this will help some to bridge the gap in themselves when their belief that something can happen is shaky. It is not a substitute for belief in the divine and in the self but is a way to help the person believe in the possibility when there is so little evidence for most people that it can happen successfully, simply because there seem to be so few reliable precedents. This is not truly correct because it is a problem of the many disinformation campaigns, the distortions of the media, the lack of interest, and the lack of belief in those told accounts of such communications, and then refusing to support the spread of the revelation. So the use of a work-around, like the Ghost Box, will help build hope that communication can happen, and if the other conditions are met, it will.
