This is a powerful perception and understanding about what it means to be with a friend and companion who truly gets you, has been exposed to what you represent, how you think, your personality and makeup, and your general abilities, and a detailed awareness and inventory of how someone looks at the world and thinks about things. That depth of understanding is the foundation for building trust between friends. After all, that is the difference between a friend and a stranger, getting to know them and becoming more fully aware of what they are really like, what they are made of, so to speak, and capable of doing. A friend will have passed this test with the friends they enjoy, opening up enough to let people into their inner thoughts to some extent and seeing they are safe to do so, and finding the points of common interest and beliefs and how there is a basic resonance enables building trust as well as personal satisfaction because it acts as a validation that one has passed muster, that all you have strived to do and become has been inspected and deemed sufficient to be considered acceptable—that is the deep understanding fostered by the process of friendship and is the essence of its makeup. The truest of friends and the deepest friendships hold few surprises because the participants in the friendship have put one another to the test in so many ways and gained the understanding of where they stand, in what is acceptable and what may be less so, and truly prove to themselves they are fitting in and so will not be rejected and are not at risk of betrayal or rejection. So developing that understanding is not only a requisite but a deep and lasting reward of friendship.
