This will obviously have many differing interpretations depending on the person making the proclamation, and the ear of the listener. It is a humorous exposition of the human condition in the sense of being fragile and having many things beyond one’s personal control that may become an overriding consideration and be quite urgent and quite painful. This is certainly true of bodily needs as stated overtly here. Hunger, thirst, the need for dealing with bodily functions, and the protection of the relatively frail human body needing clothing and shelter are necessities for happy living and there are all too frequent reminders of human frailty through all of life. The reality of being alive is a miracle, and that life is fragile is the hallmark of the human dilemma. This is intended to be the case, because it creates an imperative to see to the creature needs as well as creature comforts. For if one does not, life can end prematurely. This applies much pressure to learn, to grow, to excel, and to become accomplished in the art of living ideally. Those who do are more successful and longer-lived. They have more happiness and joy along the way as well. This is reflected in the saying because it alludes to the suffering that results from human lack and incapacity to take timely action or meet a pressing need. There is also a psychological principle encapsulated here, that joy and happiness can be fleeting whereas pain and suffering seem interminable. This is true of boredom as well, as anyone can attest who has sat in a dull classroom waiting for the bell to ring or indeed someone needing to meet a call of nature but forced to wait. There is a purpose for this phenomenon because it keeps the risks of life front and center and forces humans to deal with necessities as a priority. This has survival value and it is part of the learning and discrimination needed to stay the course and be successful in getting the most out of each lifetime. So there is method to the madness, so to speak, that pain is a part of the experience. It is the most powerful signal that can be used to create a sense of urgency and importance as a motivation to spur someone to act in a timely way to head off a worse penalty. This, in the end, serves you well and will as often as not lead you to making progress and a successful future, especially if you listen to the message and heed the warning.
