This is a broad question you are asking when there are countless variables forming a person's energetic makeup and resistance to penetration of their auric field by spirit meddlers. So there is no one answer, but a countless number of answers depending not only on the individual on the receiving end, but even the time and place when they might be challenged by approaching spirits. As people vary greatly over time, moment to moment and day to day, in the flow and flux of their energies and consequently their defenses, emotional exhaustion, stress, anxiety, despair, sadness, fear, and anger all weaken a person to make them more vulnerable. So even if someone has had protocol sessions performed for their benefit, with requests for protection included, the client's emotional state may undo the intended protections because the client, in effect, is lowering their guard and making themselves vulnerable to an attacker. The request for protection can be used to bridge temporary periods of risk to some extent, but there are limits and that is a variable with respect to an individual, their history, and their state of mind. So the protection requests are far from perfect. Every day is a new day, and every thought is a new thought. This is why the goal of healing to reach a level of true enlightenment is so very important, because it is when people get enough healing and become stronger that they will be truly safe for an extended period of time, and perhaps indefinitely, if they can continue to stand strong. So that is not up to the protocols and their implementation alone. The partnership with Creator is not only between the practitioner of the healing and the Almighty, but includes a healing circuit with the client also, and their higher self. So the recipient of the healing can be a weak link to limit the benefits and their persistence. This is why repeat sessions are so important, because when there is a setback it may take a period of time during which repeated work is done to regain the high ground once again.
